Youtube’s Thumbnail Review System Is Broke

What Youtube deems to be Sex and NudityNeedless to say, it is broken. That is how I am going to start this short but precise blog post.

Below is what was sent to me for thumbnails that were in question and deemed “sexual and against Youtube’s policy.” I put the thumbnail in question right here.

We wanted to let you know our team reviewed your content, and we think it violates our sex and nudity policy. We know you may not have realized this was a violation of our policies, so we’re not applying a strike to your channel. However, we have removed the following content from YouTube:

My other thumbnails that should be badWe realize this may be disappointing news, but it’s our job to make sure that YouTube is a safe place for all. If you think we’ve made a mistake, you can appeal this decision – you’ll find more details below.

It clearly says “sex” meaning on this thumbnail there is sex taking place or something similar. Is there? Nope.

It also clearly says “nudity” and well, is Tara’s titties hanging out? Nope.

So exactly what is the problem here? Two fully clothed video game characters, albeit, skin tight clothes, but almost no skin showing at all. There is no nudity, there is no sex. In fact, this is a pretty tame thumbnail to say the least, compared to the examples below.

So below I have a gallery of images, screen captures if you will of a few other people I see posting videos. Included in the post is the list of thumbnails of previous Tara game plays that are the same thing. But they are ok for some reason…

You can see these are LIVE youtube videos with these thumbnails. Some are just sexy, one has flat out nudity and another has sex. Needless to say NSFW Warning. They are ALL ok by Youtube’s standards apparently.

Mainly because all of these I pulled from are channels with over 750K in subscribers, meaning at some level they will make money for Youtube. The more subs and views you get, the more you can get away with things. Much like real life… more money / power, the more you get away with. Risk reward status, better chance for Youtube to make money, the more likely they keep everything in place.

Can you see it now? How broke Youtube is?
